What is a Dental Sealant?

A dental sealant is a protective plastic coating painted onto children’s teeth to help prevent the formation of cavities. Regular brushing and flossing are the best preventive measures against cavities, however good oral hygiene alone cannot prevent cavities. Stray food particles may still settle in crevices of a tooth’s surface, creating the acidic residue that causes cavities. Dental sealants form a barrier that keeps these food particles from settling in tooth fissures and forming cavities.

Who Should Get Dental Sealants

Children, ages 6-12 are most prone to cavities, therefore pediatric dentists recommend that children get dental sealants on their molars and premolars as soon as they emerge.

Benefits of Dental Sealants

  • Reduction in cavities by up to 80%
  • Reduction in dental procedures long term

How Dental Sealants Are Applied

Dental Sealants are applied within our pediatric dentist office. During the procedure, a gel is painted onto the chewing surface of the molar to texturize the surface, ensuring the sealant adheres effectively. The dental sealant is then applied directly to the tooth enamel, where it bonds to the tooth. The process is sometimes finished with a curing light.

Potential Risks or Concerns

  • There is the risk of replacement and reapplication of the sealant, especially if the sealant was initially applied in young children. Dental sealants usually last up to ten years, and should be checked for damage or wear during regular checkups.
  • There is a small risk of BPA exposure, however recent studies indicate that this risk is extremely minimal.
  • Cost can sometimes be a concern; however, many insurance providers cover dental sealants; so check your coverage to minimize costs.
